Shaw ready to push on having returned to starting XI

Luke Shaw returned to Manchester United’s starting line-up against Southampton yesterday for the first time in the Premier League since facing Southampton earlier in January.

Playing more comfortably in his natural left-back position, the 19-year-old was on the left flank behind Adnan Januzaj who was given another opportunity by Louis van Gaal..

Overall, it was a solid performance from Shaw given that he is still finding his feet at the club, thanks in no small part due to Van Gaal changing his position around from left wing-back to full-back.

Shaw, who joined for £27m in the summer, got himself into a few dangerous positions at times and linked up well on occasion with Adnan Januzaj but wasn’t able to find the final ball too often with his crossing.

It’s still very early in Shaw’s career but his form prior to an ankle injury which setback his progress was more like the Shaw who was so impressive for Southampton last season and he’ll be afforded plenty of patience having completed his move in the summer.

In order to help his fitness, Louis van Gaal may well use Shaw for Tuesday night’s FA Cup game against Cambridge United.
