Man Utd’s interest in Andy Kellett dates back to 2013

MUTV have released a video from 2013 showing Manchester United U21s coach Warren Joyce praising new signing Andy Kellett.

Bolton Wanderers defender Kellett, 21, signed for Man United on loan on deadline day with Saidy Janko going the other way and the news came as a shock for many Man United fans but the video, from MUTV, shows there was some logic and thought put into the deal.

In the video, Joyce praises the defender’s attitude following a 4-0 Manchester Senior Cup win for the Reds back in September 2013. Despite sustaining an injury, Kellett managed to hold his own against Adnan Januzaj and Wilfried Zaha, who both played in the game.

Speaking about Kellett’s performance, Joyce said: “I’ve been impressed by the kid every time we’ve played against him and he showed a lot of guts tonight.

“He’s playing injured and still having a go. There’s a lot of people who would have ducked that tonight.

“He kept going, made a fair share of tackles when he was fit and kept going when he was injured. You’ve got to applaud someone with a character like that.”

The video provides some much-needed background on Kellett, who only made four senior appearances for Bolton.

Kellett himself admitted that he thought it was a wind-up when he was told of Man United’s interest but the coaching staff obviously thought that he could do well for the U21s. Whether or not he takes his chance remains to be seen.
