FAYC: Tottenham 3-1 Man Utd – Stunning Rashford goal not enough for U18s

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United’s FA Youth Cup dreams for another season ended as Tottenham Hotspur deservedly won 3-1 at White Hart Lane.

United had a sluggish start and struggled to get a foothold in the game as all the initial chances fell to Spurs.

Azzaoui’s poorly hit corner was flicked on by Walkes after poor defending and Georgiou fired home to give Tottenham the lead as United conceded for the first time in this season’s competition.

Marcus Rashford pulled United back level as his free kick from 30 yards out left Tottenham’s goalkeeper Voss with no answer and United slowly got back into the match having gained a foothold in the game.

Callum Gribbin, who scored two in the last round against Hull, came close to scoring with a curled shot from the right tip of the box and Dearnley, Riley, Rashford and Gribbin all forced saves from Voss.

The second half started off well for United as Dearnley won a corner straight away but it led to nothing. United kept attacking but found it hard to break Tottenham down who applied pressure quickly and relentlessly.

As the half went on, Azzaoui put Tottenham back in just 51 seconds after Borthwick-Jackson almost put United ahead.

Tottenham’s foothold on the game got stronger after Georgiou burst forward and got in on the wrong side of Borthwick-Jackson before he slipped the ball past Henderson to make it 3-1.

Late on, with just five minutes remaining, Redmond controlled the ball on his chest and took a shot but on this occasion, Tottenham’s nervous goalkeeper made a comfortable save.

Fosu-Mensah found Demetri Mitchell late into stoppage time but unfortunately his shot was way off target.

It is interesting to note that seven of tonight’s starting XI will get another at this competition next season (especially players like Gribbin, Fosu-Mensah, Williams, Dearnley, etc will be eligible for two more seasons).

Manchester United team: Henderson, Reid, Borthwick-Jackson, Tuanzebe (c), Williams, Fosu-Mensah, Riley, Redmond, Rashford, Gribbin, Dearnley (Mitchell at 71 minutes).

Goals: Marcus Rashford.

Bookings: Marcus Rashford.
