Arsenal are set to beat Manchester United to the signing of French youngster Dayot Upamecano after Arsene Wenger sanctioned a £1m deal.
United had seemingly sealed a deadline day move for Upamecano after agreeing €450k plus bonuses deal with Ligue 2 side Valenciennes but administrative problems meant the transfer could not be completed in time.
The latest reports suggest Arsenal will capitalise on the mix-up by offering Valenciennes £1m plus extras for the 16-year-old in order to push through a deal in the summer.
Inter Milan are also monitoring Upamecano’s situation but it is understood that the teenager would prefer a move to England and you won’t get a better French connection in the Premier League than with Wenger at Arsenal.
As is always the case with signing players at that age, there are plenty more fish in the sea but what Timothy Fosu-Mensah has shown this year with United’s U18s is just how important it is to secure the right talent because he has made an excellent impression already this season.
