Carrick has not featured for Man United since the 0-0 draw with Cambridge United last month and Shaw was sent off for two bookable offences in Sunday’s draw at West Ham, so must serve a one-match suspension.
Van Gaal said there were no fresh injuries in the squad but revealed he may rotate his players following a gruelling game at Upton Park.
Giving an update on his team selection, van Gaal said: “Only Michael Carrick is injured. Luke Shaw is of course suspended so I have to choose out of the rest. Yesterday I played five players of my selection in the second team [Under-21s] and they won against Chelsea.
“But I have to see how the players have recovered from the match against West Ham United – that was a tough game, we had to fight until the end so I have to look and see how they have recovered.”
Van Gaal recently stated Carrick is ahead of schedule in his return from injury after it was originally thought the midfielder would be out for a month with a muscle rupture.
It has been a stop-start campaign for Carrick after he had surgery on his ankle before the season started.
His return to the United line-up coincided with the team’s best period of form in the season and his continued absence is as a blow.
