Van Gaal backs McNair to become a top player

by Ben Topliss

Louis van Gaal has praised Paddy McNair after the defender signed a new contract at Manchester United.

The contract means McNair is now committed to United until 2017 with the option of a further year. It is a deserved reward for the youngster who has impressed for the club since graduating from the U21s this season.

Van Gaal clearly rates the 19-year-old and spoke of his pride at having a young player come through into the first-team.

Speaking about McNair, van Gaal said: “Paddy has risen through the ranks to become an integral part of the first-team squad.

“He has all the attributes to develop into a top player. Promoting youth players is very important both to myself and to the club and I am delighted Paddy has signed a new contract.”

McNair has looked assured and confident when called upon by van Gaal this season and most recently impressed in United’s FA Cup fourth round tie against Cambridge United last week.

Playing at right back, McNair produced a good performance and even showed plenty of attacking intent. He had a hand in Juan Mata‘s opener and eventually won the Man of the Match award for his efforts.

Earlier this week, Van Gaal went as far as to say that McNair could be Man United’s right-back for the next decade which is high praise indeed and his new contract is a reflection of the faith placed in him by United’s boss.

McNair will be delighted to sign a new contract and will now be looking to cement a regular place in United’s first team.
