Wayne Rooney is one of Manchester United’s all-time great strikers. He has proven time and time again he can win games by himself and is close to breaking England and United goalscoring records.
It is frustrating then to see Rooney play so poorly in a midfield role under Louis van Gaal. Ineffective and predictable in United’s 1-1 draw against West Ham United on Sunday, the England captain simply cannot continue to operate in the middle of the pitch.
A recent graphic from Squawka has shown just how poorly Rooney has played in the position. In five games since the start of 2015, the England captain has registered zero goals, zero assists and zero shots on target for United. He has also made 67 unsuccessful passes:

Van Gaal has stated that Rooney will continue to play in midfield but it is clear to United fans he must be moved up top if the club are to prosper. It is not as if United do not have a replacement with Ander Herrera continuing to warm the bench.
The change will mean one of Robin van Persie or Radamel Falcao will have to be dropped but it is a decision van Gaal will have to make as United bid to qualify for Champions League football next season.
