Rooney has had to settle for a midfield role in recent games for Man United where he has had limited influence in attack to the point where he didn’t have a touch in West Ham’s area in the game at Upton Park on Sunday.
Fans have been calling for Rooney to start up front and will be glad to hear Van Gaal is open to the idea should it suit ‘team circumstances’.
“When you play him [Rooney] in midfield you are not always in the situation to score,” Van Gaal said.
“So when you say he is not scoring then, of course, midfielders are not scoring too much.
“He is not in the front three, he is in the back three of the midfield.
“It [Rooney’s position] is dependable on the circumstances. How we are satisfied, or not, how he is satisfied, or not.
“If it is a better contribution for our team to play up front, or not. That can change every week.”
Rooney has been wasted in a midfield role at the same time as Van Persie and Falcao have looked toothless in attack, something which has added to the frustration of fans but Van Gaal has opened up the possibility of a return for Rooney up front.
It’s his natural position. Rooney scores goals, that’s what he has built his career on and to stifle that on purpose without any real reward has been nonsensical so far.
Hopefully Van Gaal’s comments mean Rooney could start up front tonight against Burnley and get straight back among the goals.
