by Phil Shearer

Will Keane scored his first goal for Sheffield Wednesday to salvage a point for The Owls against Cardiff City. Keane completed 90 minutes and netted from the penalty spot in the 75th minute to draw Wednesday level and rescue a point from the game.

Sam Johnstone kept a clean sheet as Preston secured a 1-0 win over Coventry City. Johnstone’s clean sheet helped Preston on their way to securing their first win in six League One matches, with veteran Kevin Davies notching the winner.

Tom Cleverley’s woes continued as Aston Villa slumped to another defeat, this time at the hands of league leaders Chelsea. Cleverley completed 74 minutes, picking up a yellow card along the way, before being replaced by Scott Sinclair. Cleverley’s performance brought further criticism from Villa fans but Paul Lambert has given his support to the struggling journeyman.

Javier Hernandez made another brief cameo for Real Madrid in their 4-0 thrashing at the hands of local rivals Atletico. Hernandez played 17 minutes in the humiliating defeat for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Hernandez has struggled to see regular playing time in Madrid and has not scored for the Spanish giants since October last year.

Also in Madrid, Guillermo Varela was in the Real Madrid Castilla side for their 2-2 draw with Athletic Bilbao’s reserve side.

Ben Pearson completed 90 minutes for Barnsley as they lost 2-0 at the hands of Swindon Town. Swindon dominated the game and Pearson struggled to make a significant impact on the match.

Joe Rothwell was brought on as a substitute after 45 minutes as Blackpool were comprehensively beaten by Norwich City. Rothwell picked up a yellow card in his 45 minute appearance, Norwich were comfortable in their 4-0 win and Rothwell had limited input on the game.

Nani was substituted in injury time as Sporting conceded a late goal to cost them a win over local rivals Benfica. Sporting went ahead after 88 minutes through Jefferson, but conceded a 94th minute equaliser to throw away 3 points. Nani was replaced by Diego Capel in the 91st minute.

Angelo Henriquez completed 90 minutes and scored as Dinamo Zagreb ran out 2-1 winners over Lokomotiva Zagreb. This makes it 2 goals in his last 2 games for Henriquez.

Ben Amos, Saidy Janko and Jesse Lingard did not feature for their respective loan clubs at the weekend.
