Van Gaal happy for senior players to join Man United’s U21s when necessary

Louis van Gaal has explained why Victor Valdes, Rafael, Ashley Young and Tyler Blackett all played for Manchester United’s U21s on Monday night in a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

Valdes, Rafael, Young and Blackett all started for Warren Joyce’s side and despite the lower level of competition, Louis van Gaal is happy for his players to be involved in order to help the rehabilitation of injured players.

Previously Ander Herrera had an outing with the U21s and van Gaal clearly has no qualms putting any body in that side in order to help them regain their match fitness, no matter what player it is.

“We had a lot of injuries in the first half of the season and now they are recovered,” van Gaal said.

“I think they all need match rhythm in the second team before they can play in the first squad.

“Now we’ve made this structure it’s becoming better because only Michael Carrick is injured so I think the procedure is a very good procedure.”

Although the U21s competition itself has been poor for Man United’s younger players given how little games they get to play, it’s good to see Van Gaal using it to his advantage when he can by helping the fitness of his senior players.
