Preston vs Manchester United: Potential 4-2-3-1 formation

Earlier this week, Angel di Maria and Adnan Januzaj were very good for Manchester United once they adopted the wider positions and exploited spaces being left open by Burnley’s defence.

With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at a potential 4-2-3-1 formation which not only provides the attacking spark for United’s wide players but also brings an excellent stability in the middle.

With Januzaj and Di Maria either side of Wayne Rooney, it would give United some excellent attacking options. As Di Maria and Januzaj showed against Burnley, sometimes there is simply no answer to pace and width, two characteristics which United have lacked this season going forward.

Radamel Falcao also gets his lone striker role in this formation, a position we would expect him to be better in than alongside van Persie.

This formation also allows Ander Herrera to start alongside a midfield partner in either Daley Blind or somebody else (depending on injuries). The main reason van Gaal doesn’t like the 4-4-2 diamond formation is that all the defensive duties fall on whoever is playing as the midfield anchor which is a problem this formation eliminates with two deeper central midfielders.
