Man United open contract talks with Ashley Young – report

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United have opened talks with Ashley Young over a contract extension , sources close to ESPN report.

Young’s current contract expires in the summer of 2016 but Man United are believed to be keen to tie the 29-year-old down to a new long-term deal would see him stay for longer.

More than most United players, Young has had a tumultuous career at Old Trafford which has seen more peaks and troughs thanks to changes in form, injuries and self-belief but he has now established himself as an important squad player under Louis van Gaal.

If you had asked United fans last year what an injury to Young would have meant to the team, nobody would have batted an eyelid yet his absence has been felt in van Gaal’s side thanks to Young’s redevelopment as an impressive wing-back.

It’s a testament to how well Young has done to adapt under van Gaal and now that he has returned to fitness, he’ll be challenging Luke Shaw for the left-back spot.

Young’s versatility bodes well for his future under van Gaal as the United boss is a well known admirer of multi-functional players, so it’s no surprise if contract talks had begun.

Shaw has to be considered United’s first choice left-back but so far this season Young has proved to be more adept at the left wing-back role than Shaw, so has been an important member of the squad.
