Manchester United monitoring Raphael Varane ahead of summer move – report

Manchester United are monitoring unsettled Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane ahead of a move in the summer transfer window.

The Daily Mirror reports that Man United manager Louis van Gaal is looking for a world class centre-back to strengthen his squad next season due to the indifferent form of Jonny Evans and the fitness of Phil Jones.

Varane has become unsettled at Madrid this season as the form of Sergio Ramos and Pepe has left his first team opportunities limited.

The 21-year-old has been included in the side recently but only because of injuries.

Madrid are looking to open contract talks with Pepe, which may bring things to a head with Varane.

Chelsea are also interested in the Frenchman as a potential long term replacement for John Terry.

It would take an offer of around £25m in order to prise Varane from Madrid, who is under contract at the club until 2020.
