Rafael quickly established himself as a fans’ favourite at Manchester United since his arrival in 2008. Full of energy and not afraid to take risks, the right-back was regularly seen bombing into the opposition’s final third and his passion for the club was clear for all to see.
That enthusiasm spilled over on occasion, with the Brazilian sent off during important clashes with Bayern Munich and Tottenham Hotspur in recent years.
Fans were hoping to see a big year from Rafael particularly as Louis van Gaal employed a wing-back system early on this season. It hasn’t quite worked out that way with a number of injuries stunting the 24-year-old’s progress.

@PeoplesPerson_ With LvG as boss, nothing… Gone in the summer, I'm afraid

@PeoplesPerson_ unfortunate casualty of a new regime.

@peoplesperson_ the future looks bleak. He'ld most likely be replaced by another experience Brazilian in Dani Alves come summer.

@PeoplesPerson_ He's just too rash for Van Gaal, I think. I'm not really sure what our best option is in that position right now.

@PeoplesPerson_ At this current rate, probably sold in the summer. Would like to see him given a chance to earn his place back.

Fans certainly agree that Rafael’s future at United is bleak. It appears that van Gaal, who has favoured a pragmatic approach this season, does not trust him at right-back.
It is a shame given Rafael’s popularity at Old Trafford but all signs are pointing to his summer exit.
