Kevin Davies: Manchester United’s Radamel Falcao needed a cuddle

Preston North End striker Kevin Davies felt Manchester United’s Radamel Falcao “looked like he needed a cuddle” during the FA Cup fifth round tie between the two sides on Monday night.

Falcao has struggled at United following his loan move from Monaco last summer and was again disappointing during the club’s 3-1 win over Preston.

The Colombian was taken off by Louis van Gaal with United 1-0 down and his replacement Ashley Young changed the game as goals from Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and Wayne Rooney sealed the team’s progression into the quarter-finals.

Davies credited van Gaal for the comeback but said that Falcao was not himself during the game.

Speaking about the match, Davies said: “You got to give Van Gaal credit [for the turnaround]. He took Falcao off and he was very quiet.

“I was marking him at corners and he just looked like he needed a cuddle, he looked a little lost at times. Obviously it’s a different style of football and a different environment for him, but Van Gaal made the change and that’s why he such a great manager.

“They were struggling to get through us, we were really untroubled until they scored, and their first goal changed the game and they obviously went on to win it.”

Falcao came to United with a reputation for being a world class goalscorer but he has been far below his best at Old Trafford and with just four goals in 19 appearances for United, his days at the club appear to be numbered unless he can dramatically improve his form.
