Former Manchester United coach Phil Neville has revealed the club wanted to sign Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi last season.
Neville, along with former Man United manager David Moyes, scouted Matuidi but he signed a new contract at PSG before they had a chance to negotiate with him.
Matuidi put in an impressive performance for the French club in their 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
Neville said him and Moyes were impressed by the 27-year-old but that they could not prise him away from the Parc des Prince.
Speaking about Matuidi, Neville said: ”We wanted to sign him. We’d heard his contract was running out and we were really interested in him. Then he signed a contact with Paris St Germain.
“We were looking at it at Man United last year to inject a little bit of energy. He runs from box to box and he carried the team forward simply through his energy on that left channel.”
It certainly is a case of ‘wanted’ and ‘try’ when it comes to Neville and Moyes’ time at United last season.
Along with Matuidi, United were rumoured to be interested in the likes of Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Toni Kroos and Neville’s comments will come as a painful reminder to United fans about a year they will want to forget.
