Manchester United are expected to be active once again the summer transfer window and The Express believe it will be another record breaking window.
Louis van Gaal signed six players last summer including Angel di Maria for a club record £59.7m for a total which was in excess of £150m and The Express report that it will be a similarly busy summer at Old Trafford with five new signings arriving.
Last year when figures emerged in the press which suggested £150m could be spent in a single summer there were plenty who felt it would never happen. What followed was United’s biggest spending transfer window ever.
Yet, despite signing some great players in the likes of Di Maria, Herrera and Blind, Man United’s squad is still some way short of being able to compete for the Premier League or Champions League trophies.
As such, the idea that another £150m could be spent is not unrealistic at all, especially when you consider the likes of Nani will be coming off the wage bill and reallocating funds.
Financially, United are in a strong position despite this year’s Champions League absence thanks to new sponsorship deals including a £75m per year partnership with Adidas which starts next season.
It is widely expected that Man United will bring in at least one new centre-back as well as a right-back and, depending on Radamel Falcao’s future, a striker too, as well as others.
Last summer, United were extremely active in the transfer window and until Louis van Gaal has got a team he is completely happy with, that spending will continue, starting with the upcoming summer.
Due to United’s commercial arm, any spending done by van Gaal will fall in line with the club’s revenues so there is no problem in that respect but it all depends on whether he can sign the players he wants for what he feels is the right prices.
