PSV boss Phillip Cocu has conceded to the fact Memphis Depay is more than likely going to secure a move away from the Dutch side this summer.
Having impressed at the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Holland under Louis van Gaal‘s guidance, Depay, 21, has been in stunning form all year for PSV having scored 18 goals in 23 total appearances and was already considered to be on Manchester United’s radar thanks to Louis van Gaal‘s presence as boss.
Dutch football expert Stefan Coerts believes Man United are favourites to sign Depay so long as van Gaal stays at the club, something which is all but guaranteed and at the very least van Gaal’s presence gives United an advantage when looking at Depay as he coached him during the World Cup.
Following Cocu’s public statement that he expects Depay to move, he will be linked to plenty of teams as well as Man United.
Cocu said: “That’s unfortunate, but on the other hand, we must as a club be proud because we have trained him.
“At some point, it becomes clear that he is ready for the next step. And yes, I think he’s going to leave PSV after this season.”
Cocu also believes that Depay has the potential to be just as good as Bayern Munich’s Dutch winger Arjen Robben.
He added: “Whether he can be as good as Arjen Robben? I think so. They are different players, but they are both fast and have a good shot. And both always have the urge to learn.
“But Memphis is only 21-years-old and only in a few years can real conclusions be drawn.”
Cocu’s public admission that Depay will be leaving is an unusual tactic but is one which will no doubt drive further interest in the Dutch winger now that it is public knowledge he is available to buy.
Man United currently don’t have much pace in attack sp the arrival of Depay would give van Gaal the right players to use a 4-3-3 formation he has traditionally used in previous years.
Van Gaal was expected to be interested in signing Depay this summer and will certainly be taking a look at him following Cocu’s comments.
