Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking: Shutting down Nani will be impossible

Wolfsburg head coach Dieter Hecking believes Sporting Lisbon midfielder Nani will be “impossible” to shutdown ahead of their clash in the Europa League.

Nani, on loan from Manchester United, scored four goals in five games in this season’s Champions League but it was not enough to keep them in the competition.

His figures have dropped in recent months but it has been a hugely impressive loan for Nani after a difficult period at Man United last season.

Nani and Sporting take on Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena on Thursday night but Hecking said he has no special plans for the 28-year-old.

Speaking about Nani, Hecking said: ”I don’t think we’re going to play special man-marking on Nani. We will try to play our usual game.

“We know the qualities of Nani, however I think it is impossible to shut him down entirely.

“I remind you of the fantastic goal he made at Maribor, when he decided the whole game with just one scene.”

Nani has seemingly turned his career around in Portugal following some increasingly average performances towards the end of his time at Old Trafford.

He has impressed so much that there have been calls for him to return to the club next season. Whether or not the pragmatic Louis van Gaal would be keen on the winger remains to be seen.
