The 33-year-old has been sidelined since rupturing a muscle in training at the end of January.
In his absence, Daley Blind has played in the midfield role but van Gaal will be keen to get Carrick back to action, although he aired on the side of caution by not putting too much expectation on when he will return.
“Only Carrick is still injured,” van Gaal said.
“I think he shall train with the group next week. I expect that, but you never know. You’ll have to wait and see.”
When fit, Carrick was very influential as the deep lying midfielder for United but he’s not had much luck with injuries which means he has had to spend a large portion of the season on the sidelines.
Carrick has been in the news this week after reports suggested United are going to hand him a one-year contract extension and fans will be delighted to hear he is not far away from returning to action.
When Carrick does return, van Gaal will have to decide whether he or Blind starts in midfield and that’s a topic of debate among fans right now.
