Wayne Rooney: Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo are the best I’ve played with

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney says Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo are the two best players he’s played with at Old Trafford.

Scholes won 11 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and a host of other trophies for United and played with Rooney during some of the team’s most successful periods.

Ronaldo was at United for six years between 2003 and 2009 and developed into one of the world’s best players while at the club. The 30-year-old eventually moved to Real Madrid and this year won his third Ballon D’or award after an outstanding season in Spain.

Although Rooney has played with lots of world-class players, it is Ronaldo and Scholes who stick out in his mind as the best he has played against.

When asked to reflect on the finest players he’d shared a team with for United or England, Rooney said: “There’s been so many. I can tell you two. I can’t tell you one. Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Scholes.

“Those two, for different reasons, have been fantastic.”

In their prime, Scholes and Ronaldo would have walked into the starting XI of almost any team around the world. Scholes was the best midfielder of his generation and Ronaldo made himself the best player in the world by his determination to fulfill his potential.

Right now, United could do with both of them in Louis van Gaal‘s starting XI for the next match.
