Oliver Rathbone scored a last-minute wonder goal for Manchester United’s U18s on Saturday as they secured a 1-0 win against Derby County.
The youngster had only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes before the strike, which was from just inside the Rams’ half. The goal was a special one, reminiscent of Wayne Rooney’s Goal of the Season against West Ham United last season.
Prior to Rathbone’s goal, Derby had come closest to opening the scoring. First of all, Dean Henderson was forced into a fine save before the home side hit the woodwork.
At the other end, Man United’s Demetri Mitchell tried an ambitious overhead kick which flew just wide. It was the first of a number of openings for United but they could not convert them into goals.
That was until Rathbone’s fantastic effort, which sealed the three points and kept up United’s push for a place in the top four.
United XI: Henderson; Reid, Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson; Riley, Thompson, Redmond, Mitchell; Rashford, Croskery. Subs: Byrne, Fosu-Mensah, Gribbin, Rathbone.
