Player Ratings: Swansea 2-1 Manchester United – Van Persie woeful

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea 6 Could do little about either goal and made one solid save to deny Ki a second in the second half. Will be frustrated another deflection beat him.

Patrick McNair 3 Really struggled and was hooked at half-time, similar to his performance at Southampton earlier in the season. Good player but a long way to go.

Phil Jones 5 Made one good tackle to stop Gomis running through on goal but again spread nervousness in defence. United tend to look a bit steadier with Smalling in his place.

Marcos Rojo 5 Solid enough but not as good as he has been lately, the Argentine also blew a great chance at 1-1 to put United ahead.

Luke Shaw 6 Attacked really well and offered a good outlet down the left. Lost Ki for the goal before being replaced.

Daley Blind 5 Was once again given little protection as van Gaal chose to play Wayne Rooney up front. His passing was exceptionally neat as usual but he was left exposed too often.

Ander Herrera 6 Showed why he should be in the team but lack of protection to Blind showed why he usually isn’t. Undoubtedly talented and a great goal, he does pose a long-term problem.

Angel Di Maria 5 Lively but wasted cross after cross. Not one of his finest days after showing a glimmer of good form lately. Frustrating.

Marouane Fellaini 3 Never happened for him today. Foul after foul saw him get more frustrated and he couldn’t influence the game as United’s attack played around him.

Wayne Rooney 6 Needs to stay up front. Some really nice touches today and looked ten times livelier than his strike partner. Only ounce of pace United have up top.

Robin van Persie 3 Quite simply awful. Incredible van Persie lasted the 90 minutes, every half chance went spiralling away from goal, looked leggy, tired and at times disinterested.

Substitutes

Antonio Valencia 5 Offered more than McNair did but was just part of an overall frustrating afternoon for United, his crosses hit Fellaini but nothing stuck.

Ashley Young 6 As against Preston, changed the game for United and proved an instant threat down the left. He’s come into his own under van Gaal.

Juan Mata N/A Had little chance to do much, United fans had probably forgotten he existed after recent spells on the bench!
