Tyler Blackett was sent off tonight for Manchester United’s U21s during their match against Sunderland for pushing a Sunderland player in the face.
In a moment of madness, Blackett raised his arms and shoved an opponent’s face right in the view of the referee who had no choice but to send him off.
It was an explicable decision from Blackett and a deserved red card which now means he will be banned for three games, a ban which will carry over to the first-team.
Earlier this season, Blackett was sent off during Man United’s 5-3 defeat to Leicester City and ever since then he hasn’t featured very often for the first-team, whereas his position was fixed in the team prior to that incident.
For all the opportunities Blackett had this season he hasn’t made the most of them. With new signings expected in the summer, the 20-year-old more than likely won’t get another extended run in the first-team under Louis van Gaal.
What that means for his future at United remains to be seen but van Gaal will be disappointed to see his reckless red card against Sunderland.
