Michael Carrick has slowly been working his way back to full fitness having suffered a ruptured muscle during training.
It was a real blow for both Carrick and Manchester United because of how important he was to the side after returning from ankle surgery earlier this season.
He has been training with the first-team this week so it shouldn’t be long before he is back in action. With that in mind, what if he was able to play this weekend?
The big question would immediately be whether Daley Blind or Carrick would start if a 4-4-2 diamond formation was chosen by van Gaal. Both players adopt a similar role as the midfield anchor. With Carrick in mind, we’ve gone for him in this formation mock-up.
Ahead of him, the only change in attack sees the nimble Juan Mata brought into the no.10 role which should allow Wayne Rooney more freedom up top because he will be given more chances with Mata feeding him rather than Fellaini.
What do you think of this formation?
