Manchester United vs Sunderland: Potential 4-2-3-1 – Rafael returns

by Ben Topliss

Rafael has been languishing in Manchester United’s U21s side in recent months but could be set for a return to the first-team after sitting out the 1-1 draw with Sunderland on Monday night.

The Brazilian’s demise has been a painful one to watch for Man United fans given the fact that he is such a popular figure at the club.

Louis van Gaal has seemingly lost confidence in Rafael but his exclusion from the U21s suggests he may be being saved for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Sunderland. With that in mind, what if he was able to play this weekend?

Although it would be a big departure from his usual tactics, van Gaal may use a 4-2-3-1 formation in order to protect Rafael and Luke Shaw down the flanks.

The line up would allow Daley Blind and Michael Carrick to act as anchors in United’s midfield, sweeping up behind the full-backs as they move forward.

Radamel Falcao might also thrive in this formation as he would have far more space to run into when alone up top. With Angel di Maria and Adnan Januzaj on the wings, the Colombian would be given plenty of service inside the box.
