U18s: Wolverhampton Wanderers 1–0 Manchester United: Youngsters suffer narrow defeat

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United’s U18s have suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wolverhampton Wanderers in their re-arranged fixture at the Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground this afternoon.

Gusty wind in the West Midlands contributed to an erratic game but Wolves produced a solid performance and were good value for their win.

Both teams had chances early on but Nile Ennis scored to give Wolves the lead after he capitalised on a mistake by Tyler Reid.

Man United’s response came in the form of Callum Gribbin and Devonte Redmond, who both had efforts saved by keeper Harry Burgoyne.

Joe Riley was the next to come close for United as he found space to meet Demetri Mitchell’s free kick before hitting the post.

Paul McGuinness made a triple substitution after 79 minutes played and the change almost paid off as Ruairi Croskery found the net late on but the goal was denied by the linesman’s flag.

United XI: Henderson, Reid (Thompson 79), Tuanzebe, Williams, Borthwick-Jackson, Riley, Redmond (Rathbone 79), Fosu-Mensah, Mitchell (Croskery 79), Gribbin, Rashford. Subs not used: Byrne.
