Luke Shaw believes Manchester United’s home form will be key to securing Champions League qualification this season.
Louis van Gaal’s side have won ten of their 13 Premier League fixtures at Old Trafford this season, a record that is only bettered by league leaders Chelsea.
Man United lost 2-1 away at Swansea City last weekend but are looking to bounce back from the defeat in front of their own fans against Sunderland on Saturday.
Shaw, who joined for £27m last summer, believes winning games at home will be vital if United are to finish in the top four of the league this campaign. Speaking about the side’s home form, Shaw said: “We always get that extra push at home from the fans and they’ve also been amazing away from home as well. At home it’s always different – when teams come to Old Trafford they can feel that atmosphere and it can be a scary place for other teams.
“It’s a big pitch and United have always been strong at home and won a lot of games here so that’s a very important factor as well. I always look forward to playing every game, but we’re especially looking to make sure we win this one [Sunderland].
“We’ve been working hard this week and it’s massively important that we get the victory on Saturday.”
The race for Champions League football has intensified in recent weeks, with just four points separating five teams from third to seventh. United have looked sluggish while Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Arsenal have only improved.
Shaw is right that the club’s form at Old Trafford will be vital for United’s hopes but they cannot afford to keep dropping points at places such as the Liberty stadium if they are to prosper this year.
