Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal dismisses concerns over top four finish

Louis van Gaal admits it would be a ‘big disappointment’ if Manchester United did not qualify for the Champions League this season but insisted fans must not get worried just yet.

Man United have put in some increasingly mediocre performances recently and suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Swansea City last weekend.

The loss left fourth-placed United in a precarious position in the Premier League, with just four points separating third and seventh in the table.

With Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool steadily improving as United continue to flounder, some fans are worried about their chances of qualifying for the Champions League come May.

However, van Gaal dismissed concerns but admitted it would be a blow to miss out.

Talking about the prospect of not making the top four, van Gaal said: “Big disappointment, of course, a big disappointment.

“When you start the season with the objective of finishing in the first four of the league it is your objective and you are occupied with doing that.

“But we are still there, I don’t know why are we talking about it when it is not like that, because we are still there. What is the problem?”

United’s problems have mounted in recent weeks and fans have every right to be concerned.

Robin van Persie is out of Saturday’s game against Sunderland, while Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao have had a tough time of late. Angel di Maria has also suffered a dip in form and is looking a shadow of the player who terrorised defences at Real Madrid last season. United will need to turn things around and quickly if they want to stay in the top four.
