Rumours circulated before the game that Shaw would miss out whilst Jones was also a curious absentee when the team was announced at 2pm.
But van Gaal confirmed there were no serious injuries and it seems Jones and Shaw particularly weren’t risked with United facing a midweek trip to Newcastle on Wednesday.
“Shaw had a tight hamstring and Jones was ill,” van Gaal confirmed.
“I cannot put players who are ill and tired in my line-up.”
He added on MUTV: “Victor Valdes also has a problem and wasn’t on the bench. I had to make three changes during our final day of preparation.”
The young left-back has been plagued by injuries since arriving in the summer whilst Jones’s entire Old Trafford career has gone down a similar route, although it was illness on this occasion.
With a huge FA Cup quarter-final looming on the horizon against Arsenal next weekend, van Gaal is unlikely to risk either in midweek if they are not fully ready and will be confident his team can handle it with Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo all currently fit.
