Player Ratings: Man United 2-0 Sunderland – Rooney scores, wingers shine in 4-3-3

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea 7 Had little to do late on but made a few important saves early doors, there was never any danger he’d be beaten today.

Antonio Valencia 6 Helped Januzaj a lot second half as United stretched the game, did his defensive duties as ever. Becoming a 6/10 player!

Chris Smalling 6 Had a good game at the back alongside a less solid partner. Looked more settled than Phil Jones has, should start ahead of his team-mate

Jonny Evans 5 Didn’t have a great start and once again looked unsettled but did make one or two vital interceptions. Had worse games recently.

Marcos Rojo 6 Once again covered at left-back with Luke Shaw rested. Put in a few good balls and linked up with Ashley Young. Solid game.

Ander Herrera 6 Tidy game from Herrera, some nice touches in and around the box and once again looked the part. Had a goal ruled out late on.

Daley Blind 6 Similar to his midfield compatriot, held the fort down well but got caught out once or twice, settling in at Old Trafford nicely though.

Angel Di Maria 4 Just struggled overall. One good cross almost opened Sunderland up, woeful decision making right on half-time cost him his second half place.

Wayne Rooney 7 May not have had his best game but did what strikers do, scored the goals. Penalty and a tidy header sealed the points.

Ashley Young 8 Brilliant performance from the once-maligned winger. Constant threat, hit the bar and fired another over, was United’s key outlet.

Radamel Falcao 5 Worked really hard as ever and a lovely bit of skill won the penalty. Was harshly subbed given his crucial bit of magic.

Adnan Januzaj 7 Really impressive 45 minutes from the 20-year-old. Added a threat where Di Maria failed and may have won himself a starting spot for Wednesday.

Marouane Fellaini 5 Oddly brought on just after United went ahead so didn’t need to show his aerial threat.

Juan Mata N/A Once again just another cameo from the man who’s losing out right now. What does his future hold?
