When Bob Bishop, a Manchester United scout based in Northern Ireland, first saw 15-year-old George Best playing in Belfast he sent a telegram to Sir Matt Busby which read: “I think I’ve found you a genius.”
His instinct would not let him down. One of the greatest players of his generation, Best scored 179 goals from 470 appearances during a glittering 11 year spell at Man United. He was part of the club’s legendary ‘Holy Trinity’ of players, along with Sir Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.
Blessed with the ability to pass, shoot, tackle and head, Best was above all renowned for his dribbling ability. He had the sort of nonchalant brilliance that is only seen once in a generation.
Now, COPA honours George Best by presenting the all-new COPA George Best collection. Under license from Best Promotions LLP, this line features a range of t-shirts that pay homage to one of the greatest legends in the history of football.
Best had the good looks and charm to match his talent, which meant he became one of the first celebrity footballers.
He earned a small fortune after living a life in the media spotlight but ended up losing almost all of it. When asked what had happened to the money, Best quipped: “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.”
In honour of Best, COPA’s superior quality garments are ‘Made in Europe’ and get a special treatment, which is probably COPA’s best kept secret, to give the T-shirts a super soft touch.
