Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes Angel di Maria will be a success in the Premier League despite currently going through a dip in his form.
Di Maria joined Man United last summer in a £59m move and made a sensational start to his Old Trafford career when he scored three goals in five games. However, the Argentine has had a tough time of late and was hauled off at half time by van Gaal in Man United’s 2-0 win against Sunderland on Saturday.
Irrespective of current form, van Gaal has backed Di Maria and said the struggling midfielder must be given time if he is to adapt to life in England.
Speaking about Di Maria, van Gaal said: “Every player can have that kind of match – Di Maria is not the only player who has suffered a bad day. He can be the best player in the world in the next match, so I think everything is going well. He trained very well and I don’t think there is any problem.
“I have already explained that the higher rhythm of the Premier League is one of the most important aspects but he also has to adapt to a new culture, a new environment and that is not always easy.”
Di Maria has endured a torrid time at United since recovering from a pelvic injury at the start of the year.
Against Sunderland on Saturday, the 27-year-old was predictable and laboured and he could have no complaints about his substitution. Coupled with Radamel Falcao’s struggles at United, fans are rightly concerned about the form of two of the club’s biggest ever signings. The pair will be looking to turn around their fortunes starting with Newcastle United on Wednesday night.
