Manchester United’s Robin van Persie ruled out of Newcastle United match

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has revealed Robin van Persie will miss Wednesday night’s game against Newcastle United but stopped short of giving a timeframe for his return.

Van Persie suffered an ankle injury against Swansea City last month which also kept him out of the 2-0 win against Sunderland on Saturday.

Some reports suggested Man United could be without the Dutchman for up to six weeks but swelling around his ankle delayed a more accurate analysis.

Van Gaal confirmed van Persie is definitely out of the Newcastle game and added it is too soon to say how long he will be sidelined.

Van Persie’s injury presents an opportunity to Wayne Rooney, who started up front against Sunderland after spending a number of weeks in midfield.

The United captain scored both of the team’s goals against the Mackems and put in a solid shift. Rooney’s return to form has led some fans to suggest van Persie’s injury could be a blessing in disguise for United as they bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
