Young has been one of Man United’s standout players this season and scored a late winner in the 1-0 win against Newcastle United on Wednesday.
The 29-year-old has been used in a wide range of positions for United this term including both wing-back positions and in midfield and has excelled in the roles.
Young flourished in van Gaal’s 3-5-2 formation in particular and the Dutchman has been impressed with how he has adjusted his playing style.
Speaking about Young, van Gaal said: “He is a player who wants to perform what you say. I think he fits good in my profile.
“We have played also with wing-backs and I think that is his best position. Now I use him as a winger and he does a very good job. I am pleased with him.”
Often the butt of jokes during a disappointing few seasons at Old Trafford, Young deserves huge credit for turning his United career around.
The Englishman has often been United’s most dangerous player this year and is right up there with David de Gea for the team’s player of the season so far. He has now added important goals to his game after keeping United in the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League with a dramatic goal against the Magpies.
