Man United vs Arsenal: Potential 4-2-3-1 formation – Fellaini starts

Manchester United will head into their FA Cup quarter-final clash with Arsenal with a spring in their step following the dramatic 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Against the Magpies, van Gaal opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation after playing a 4-4-2 diamond and 3-5-2 for large parts of the campaign.

The system worked for United as they had an element of control to proceedings at St James’ Park, particularly during the first half. It would be no surprise to see him continue with the formation against the Gunners.

Marouane Fellaini was preferred to Juan Mata in the hole against Newcastle and he may be used there again in order to overpower the likes of Santi Cazorla, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

Although Angel di Maria was again substituted following an indifferent showing it’s expected that the Argentine will be reinstated as he can provide a moment of quality at any point during the match.

On the other wing, Ashley Young will more than likely keep his place after his late winner against John Carver’s side. However, Van Gaal has been anything but predictable this campaign and he may well line up with a more defensive formation on Monday.
