Juan Mata thanks Manchester United fans after Newcastle United win

by Ben Topliss

Juan Mata was grateful to Manchester United fans after they cheered the team on to a late 1-0 victory against Newcastle United on Wednesday night.

Mata started the game on the bench and had to watch on as Papiss Cisse and Ayoze Perez were both denied by superb saves from David de Gea.

Meanwhile, Newcastle keeper Tim Krul kept out efforts from Wayne Rooney and Marouane Fellaini.

Man United fought hard during the match and Mata was brought on late before Ashley Young scored a dramatic winner in the dying moments of the match.

Speaking after the game, Mata praised Young for his goal and thanked the travelling fans.

Mata has been left out of Louis van Gaal’s starting XI for a number of weeks now but he has remained positive despite the snub. He has always just got on with his job in training and comes into the team whenever he is asked. It’s a great professional attitude from Mata.

His exclusion can be considered a slightly odd decision given United have enjoyed so much possession in recent weeks as Mata thrives in those conditions but it appears van Gaal must simply not trust him defensively.

That being said, the Spaniard will be looking to build on his brief cameo when United take on Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-finals next week.
