Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes fans may have to wait until next season to see the best of the club’s summer signings.
Di Maria and Falcao, in particular, have had tough times of late. Di Maria was hauled off at half time by van Gaal in United’s 2-0 win against Sunderland on Saturday while Falcao has only scored four goals for the club since arriving on loan from Monaco.
Van Gaal says all players need 12 months at a new club before they settle in, regardless of their quality.
“You can see it with every player we have bought. Shaw, Blind, Herrera and Falcao and Di Maria – so it is not a big suprise. It is more a surprise if you adapt quickly.
“When I was in German, Dutch and Spain I had the same experience with players. We need to give him and all the players time and wait and see.”
Meanwhile, Falcao has put in some increasingly mediocre shifts. United have reportedly agreed a fee with Monaco for the Colombian’s services should van Gaal wish to keep him but unless he bursts to life in the final few months of the season it would be difficult to justify what would be a huge transfer fee.
