Arsenal’s injury problems mount ahead of Manchester United tie

by Ben Topliss

Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista has been ruled out of Monday’s FA Cup tie with Manchester United by Arsene Wenger while there are question marks over the fitness of Nacho Monreal and Wojciech Szczesny.

Gabriel suffered a hamstring injury during the Gunners’ 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday and he had to be replaced by Laurent Koscielny.

Wenger confirmed the defender, who joined from Villarreal during the January transfer window, will be out for two or three weeks and will definitely miss Arsenal’s trip to Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Szczesny and Monreal face late fitness tests before a decision is made on whether they will be included in the squad to take on United.

Speaking about Arsenal’s injuries, Wenger said: “Gabriel has a hamstring injury and he will be out for two to three weeks.

“Szczęsny has a test today. If he gets through that then he will play on Monday night. Monreal might come back. He has a test today.”

The news will come as a boost to United but Arsenal have plenty of options when it comes to replacements for the trio.

Szczesny has lost his number one spot at the club to David Ospina, while Koscielny and Kieran Gibbs can fill in for Gabriel and Monreal. United have some injury problems of their own, with Robin van Persie definitely sidelined with an ankle injury while Luke Shaw is a doubt for the clash.
