Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal insists he has a good relationship with his assistant Ryan Giggs amid suggestions they were struggling to work together.
Giggs and van Gaal’s celebrations after Ashley Young‘s late winner against Newcastle United on Wednesday became a talking point in the press thanks to an article from The Telegraph’s Mark Ogden.
In the piece, Ogden said he felt Giggs is unhappy with the way van Gaal has set his team up in recent weeks.
However, a defiant Van Gaal was adamant this wasn’t the case and insisted that he has a perfectly good relationship with the Man United legend.
When asked about whether they had fallen out, van Gaal said: “I cannot answer that. We have a very bad relationship [jokes]…
“I’m very irritated by this question. We have a very good relationship, everyone can see that we work very hard together, and that goes for all the staff and players. I’ll take this up with the media, I’m not pleased.”
We’re convinced the episode is just a storm in a teacup and that fans have nothing to worry about.
In the full video (available here), Giggs jumps off his seat before clapping and smiling enthusiastically. He turns stony faced when van Gaal turns around, but it looks like nothing more than a harmless ‘I told you so’. Both van Gaal and Giggs will be looking to put the incident behind them in order to focus on the FA Cup quarter-final meeting with Arsenal next week.
