Arsene Wenger unhappy with Paul Scholes after Mesut Ozil comments

Arsene Wenger has labelled Paul Scholes’ criticism of Mesut Ozil as unfair and firmly believes he ‘would have loved’ to play alongside the German international.

Ozil has recently come back into some good form for Arsenal after having a relatively quiet return from injury in early January but despite the upturn in form, Scholes questioned his mentality and why he joined the London club.

At today’s press conference, Wenger was pressed on the subject and insisted Ozil puts more effort in that he is credited for.

“It is not fair,” said Wenger.

“A player like Paul Scholes would have loved to play with Ozil.

“I believe he has the quality, he puts a lot of effort in to help the team and he works much harder than his style shows.

“You can be cheated a little bit by his style of play, because he is fluent, easy, subtle and he does not look like he puts the effort in, but he does.

“I knew he had a good physical potential, but did not know how good he was physically.

“He has a huge physical potential.”

It’s not the first time Scholes has got under the skin of Arsenal and their fans as he previously slammed Jack Wilshere for not having made enough progress since joining the first-team. That being said, Scholes followed those comments up with something more complimentary later that year having hailed Wilshere as England’s best in-form player at the time.

Naturally, Arsenal fans will disagree with Scholes’ comments on Ozil but it will be interesting to see how much of an impact he can have at Old Trafford on Monday.
