Tom Thorpe joins Manchester United first-team training

Manchester United youngster Tom Thorpe was given the opportunity to train with the first-team this week by Louis van Gaal.

After Jonny Evans was banned for six games, it seems van Gaal took the decision to promote the 22-year-old defender into the first-team squad and it’s great to see him there.

Thorpe is a player who followers of the U21s have been itching to see given a chance with the senior squad after the likes of Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair were given the nod ahead of him.

Although he was given his first-team debut in a two-minute cameo against West Ham, Thorpe hasn’t been involved in the senior set-up since but Evans’ absence has presented him with another opportunity, one he will be eager to grab with both hands.

The likeliness of Thorpe being given game time between now and the end of the season might be low but simply seeing him promoted into the first-team squad is a step in the right direction for a player who deserves an opportunity to show what he’s got.
