Manchester United assistant manager Ryan Giggs has backed struggling Angel di Maria to find his best form at Old Trafford.
Di Maria has suffered from a dip in his performance levels since returning from a pelvic injury at the start of 2015 and the Argentine was substituted early by Louis van Gaal in Man United’s last two matches.
After a blistering start to his United career, Di Maria’s performances have been a worry for fans and there have been calls for him to be dropped from the starting XI.
Giggs insists Di Maria has the quality to succeed at United but that it may take time for him to find his best form.
Speaking about Di Maria before his performance against Arsenal, Giggs said: “I think his confidence is fine. He’s a quality player and we’ll be looking for him to produce because it is big game after big game now.
“Players get used to different leagues, sometimes quickly and sometimes it takes a bit of time.
“He had a really good start to the season but with players who take risks and who can win games it’s always difficult to be consistent because they will try things that other players won’t do.
“They’re capable of doing that and that’s why they’re match-winners and the best players.”
Di Maria has looked a shadow of the player who terrorised defences while at Real Madrid last season.
United spent £59m on the midfielder last summer, making him the fifth most expensive player of all-time, but he has looked anything but a club-record signing since the start of the year and his poor run continued on Monday.
A stupid red card compounded Man United’s misery in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Arsenal and although Giggs has backed him to succeed, Di Maria’s moment of madness means some good moments earlier in the game from him will now be completely overlooked.
Di Maria isn’t in a good place right now and the sooner that changes the better for United.
