Manchester United are tracking Portuguese right-back Ricardo Esgaio ahead of a potential transfer in the summer.

Esgaio is currently on loan at Academica from Sporting Lisbon and has impressed during his spell at Estádio Cidade de Coimbra.

Reports have claimed Man United are keeping their eye on the 21-year-old, who can also play on the wing, along with European champions Real Madrid.

However, Sporting are reluctant to let Esgaio leave the club as he has been there since the age of 12 and a €45m release clause is something that could put off potential suitors.

United have had success with Sporting youngsters having signed Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani in the past and the summer purchase of Marcos Rojo was the latest deal between the clubs.

With Rafael languishing in the U21s and Antonio Valencia going through a bad patch of form, it appears Louis van Gaal has lost faith in his right-backs and wants to bring some new talent to Old Trafford.

Esgaio isn’t the first right-back to be linked with United and almost certainly won’t be the last because although van Gaal spent £150m last summer, it’s widely expected he will do the same again this year.
