Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Douglas Costa has confirmed Manchester United made an offer for him in the January transfer window but it was refused by the Ukrainian club.
FourFourTwo also claims Man United sent scouts to watch Douglas when he was a young player at Gremio but they didn’t think he was suitable for the Premier League.
Instead, Shakhtar and Villarreal were the only two teams who made offers for the then-19-year-old.
United could currently do with a tricky winger like Douglas due to Adnan Januzaj’s poor form and Juan Mata’s continued exclusion from the starting XI so it’s no surprise to hear they made a move for him in January.
Speaking about Douglas, FourFourTwo’s Marcus Alves said: ”According to the man himself, offers from Chelsea and Manchester United were refused in the last transfer window.”
As far as United are concerned, Douglas is the latest in a long line of players who they went for but didn’t quite get.
Players such as Eden Hazard and Dani Alves have slipped through the net at Old Trafford, while John Obi Mikel even posed in a United shirt before signing for Chelsea shortly afterwards. With the likes of Jonny Evans and Radamel Falcao currently struggling at United, it’s painful for fans to look back on what might have been.
