Paul Scholes: Manchester United don’t have the right players

Paul Scholes admires what Louis van Gaal is trying to do with Manchester United’s style of play but said the squad simply doesn’t have the quality to implement it properly.

Van Gaal has come under fire for Man United’s slow, possession based football this season.

Despite a good record of two defeats in 22 games prior to the defeat against Arsenal on Monday, many fans have called for a return to the attacking style the club is famous for.

Scholes believes Van Gaal isn’t to blame and that the lack of quality within the squad is the reason for United’s poor performances.

Speaking about United’s style of play, Scholes said: “Watching United at Old Trafford on Monday, I know what Louis van Gaal is trying to do with this team. I do like the concept. I just question whether he has the players to do it.

“In recent weeks, Van Gaal has tried what I would describe as a more Barcelona-style approach to games. His centre-backs push wide, the full-backs push on and the team pass the ball. It has worked against the weaker teams but it is against the stronger sides, starting with Spurs and the high-pressing game they play, that you have to wonder whether it will be found out.

“To play this way, you really need to be exceptional. Barcelona can do it because they have the players and they have been playing this way for years. United have spent around £220m in the last three transfer windows and yet I would question whether they have the players to operate this system.”

It is true that van Gaal has an unbalanced squad but some of the Dutchman’s decisions have not helped his cause.

Instead of bringing on Juan Mata or Radamel Falcao against the Gunners, van Gaal threw on Adnan Januzaj for Marcos Rojo with his last remaining change.

The substitution backfired and United simply lumped the ball up to Marouane Fellaini and hoped for the best. United are reportedly keen on overhauling their squad in the summer but fans may wonder if money is the solution to the team’s problems.
