Van Persie pulled up with an injury in the latter stages of Man United’s game away to Swansea a few weeks ago and had to leave the Liberty Stadium on crutches.
Having already been out of action for a few weeks, it’s clear van Persie’s injury is quite serious and van Gaal is waiting on the Dutch striker to step up in his rehabilitation procecss.
“He is still with the medical department and needs to take the step to the technical department,” van Gaal said yesterday at the Tottenham pre-match press conference.
“He is always training but the medical department is also sports science so he is training inside, not outside on the pitch. Even when he is on the pitch, he is with the medical department.
“He will then take the step to the technical department and then we have a process when he comes into our selection and trains.”
Having enjoyed an injury free first season under Sir Alex Ferguson, van Persie’s injury problems have come back to haunt him over the last couple of years and especially in the past eight months.
Following an intense World Cup campaign with Holland, van Persie was given an extended summer holiday by van Gaal in order to recuperate from exhaustion and he has never looked 100% at any point this season.
This latest setback means van Persie is going to miss some of United’s most important games and even when he does return, it will take him some time to re-find his full match fitness so there is a chance he won’t have much of an impact at all on the rest of the Premier League season
