Louis van Gaal is well aware he cannot guarantee Angel di Maria will be a Manchester United player next season but has been very impressed his attitude follow a burglary at his family home and feels he is happy at the club.
Di Maria’s inconsistent form of late has led to some fans calling into question his longevity at the club and whether or not he will have a long term career at Old Trafford.
Speaking about the Argentinian, van Gaal made it abundantly clear he understood any player’s mental approach is ultimately the key factor in a transfer and said he felt confident Di Maria’s was in the right place.
“As a manager, you can never say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ because the player shall always decide at the end,” van Gaal said about Di Maria.
“But I don’t think he shall move. In spite of this incident, that he had with his wife at his home, he is very pleased to be here at Manchester United.
“I think he shall stay because of what I have seen with his reaction following the defeat and his red card, it has been very good. I like his attitude.”
Thoughts of selling Di Maria seem very premature at this stage off the back of some poor form but there is understandably some concern as to just how ineffective he is in comparison to at the start of the season.
From a players’ perspective, van Gaal always stands up for his and that’s the case here with Di Maria which will no doubt help him and divert at least some pressure away from him. However, United’s club record signing will have to brush himself off and start showing why he was worth the outlay this summer.
