The victory was richly deserved following a commanding performance from Man United. They didn’t play so well against the Gunners, with former striker Danny Welbeck sealing a 2-1 victory for his new club with a late winner.
Mata was pleased to keep up in the race to finish in the top four and said the win against Spurs was for the fans.
Speaking about the result, Mata said: “It was a very important victory in order to finish in the top four, since Tottenham is also in the same race. It was arguably our best first half of the season. In those 45 minutes we got three goals and we could have scored some more. The team played with a fast, intense and vertical style, also pressing on Spurs’ half of the pitch. I was very happy for the fans after the disappointment in the FA Cup against Arsenal last Monday.
“The best way to recover was by playing a good game and winning for the fans, and that’s what we gave to them – to you – against Tottenham, a very good team that we managed to neutralise.”
It’s amazing what a week does in football, with United putting in two performances at complete ends of the spectrum.
The two results can perhaps be summed up by the fortunes of Fellaini. Against Arsenal, United chose to lump the ball up to the Belgian with no real intent whatsoever. Against Spurs, Fellaini was transformed and he was arguably United’s Man of the Match. The pendulum swings.
