Mata was superb against Spurs and was a constant threat as Man United sealed an important three points for their season.
The Spaniard’s performance was particularly satisfying for fans given the fact that he had spent a number of weeks on the substitute’s bench prior to the game.
Mata said he enjoyed getting back into the starting XI and thanked fans for their standing ovation after he was brought off on 77 minutes.
Speaking about the match, Mata said: “From a personal point of view I have to say that I felt really good on the pitch and I enjoyed again from the beginning with my team-mates, trying to be helpful in all aspects of the game. I heard your applause and I want to thank you for that.
“Ever since my first day as a United player I felt the love from Old Trafford and I want you to know that it helps a lot when you play. Your applause when I was substituted and on my way to the dressing room is something I will never forget. Thank you so much to all of you…”
It was a mesmerising performance from Mata and one that reminded Louis van Gaal of his quality.
Instead of complaining about his situation, Mata has been patient and worked hard in order to get back into the team. However, detractors will say the 26-year-old does not do enough defensively, which may be in van Gaal’s thinking when deciding his team for the game against Liverpool this weekend.
